Heat Pumps in Queensland: What Works and What Doesn’t

Are Heat Pumps Right for Your Sunshine Coast Home?

Heat pump water heaters are gaining traction across Queensland and for good reason.
They offer significant energy savings and are ideal for homes looking to reduce dependence on electric or gas storage systems. But like any technology, performance depends on the conditions they’re installed in.

In this post, we’ll break down where heat pumps work best in Queensland, when they under perform, and what you need to know before choosing one for your home.

Banner Products Overview

Why Queensland Is a Great Fit for Heat Pumps

Heat pump systems rely on the ambient air temperature to extract heat and transfer it to water. In coastal and subtropical areas like the Sunshine Coast, average temperatures stay well above 5°C all year. That’s the sweet spot for heat pump efficiency.

Heat pumps are now delivering consistent hot water with minimal boosting, low running costs, and long system lifespan especially with reputable brands like Reclaim Energy, Rinnai and Rheem

When heat pumps first appeared in Australia, they did come with a lot of problems.
They were noisy, poorly built and their lifetime was not great. They were regarded as not a real hot water system alternative.
Thankfully, they were improved upon and in the last 5 years, heat pumps have come along in leaps and bounds and they are now a very popular type of hot water system we are installing on the Sunshine Coast.
If you stick to the leading brands, you will be glad you made the switch.

At Flaregas Plumbing, we are the Reclaim agents on the Sunshine Coast.
The other brand we are often installing is Rinnai and Rheem heat pumps.
All three brands are solid and backed with exceptional customer service.

When Heat Pumps May Not Perform as Well

Not every part of Queensland offers the same conditions. Inland, elevated, or heavily shaded areas may reduce performance. These include:

  • Inland towns or rural Queensland
Overnight temperatures in regions like Stanthorpe or Toowoomba often dip below 5°C, which reduces heat extraction efficiency.
  • Confined or poorly ventilated spaces
Heat pumps require open airflow. Installing a unit in a tight or enclosed area can lead to overheating or noisy operation.
  • Extremely high water demand
Very large families may require higher storage capacity or a dual heating strategy (e.g. smart controllers with midday boosting).

What Most Homeowners Don’t Know About Heat Pumps

1. You don’t need solar panels
Heat pumps operate independently from solar PV systems—but they work exceptionally well with them. You can use excess daytime solar to power the unit, increasing self-consumption and reducing export waste.

2. Modern units are much quieter
Older models had compressor noise issues. Brands like Reclaim and Rinnai now use advanced insulation and quiet-mode settings to reduce output below 48 decibels.

3. Rebates apply to eligible models only
Not all heat pumps qualify for federal STCs. We install systems that do—and we manage the paperwork for you.

Best Practices for Performance in QLD

  • Choose a heat pump designed for Australian conditions
Avoid generic imports or systems not rated for subtropical climates.
  • Use a certified installer
Heat pump performance depends on correct placement, airflow, and controller configuration. Our team ensures it’s set up to match your usage and local electricity tariff.
  • Set smart schedules
Brands like Reclaim offer smart controllers to heat water during peak solar hours or cheap off-peak rates.
  • Size the tank correctly
Most families will be well-served by a 250–300L tank. Undersized systems lead to overuse of the backup element and higher bills.
